Samsung’s perennial tagline, ‘The Next Big Thing Is Here’, has been attached to a number of their smartphones, including the Galaxy S4 and the Note II. And given their sales records, it’s not a farfetched claim. But it looks like their real next big thing might be neither smartphone nor phablet.

The Galaxy Gear name is being tossed around, with many claiming it’s a watch that will be capable of making phone calls. But that’s hardly new. Samsung released the S9110 in 2009, their slimmest Watchphone, to a lukewarm response. Accompanied by a Bluetooth headset, the S9110 was a capable phone by itself—if you discount the headset. But the rumoured Galaxy Gear smartwatch will reportedly have to pair with a phone to work, a lot like Sony’s smartwatches or the Pebble smartwatch.

What we don’t yet know is what the device will do. On the list of rumoured capabilities is answering calls (via a Bluetooth headset, we’d guess), replying to texts, IMs and emails, and surfing the web. We’d also guess there will be the standard music functions, either as a standalone player or allowing users to control music playback. We’re interested in what else Samsung has in store for the Galaxy Gear smartwatch, given that they’re rumoured to be throwing in a dual-core processor and 1GB RAM. With IFA approaching, it’s one of the possible dates for the announcement of the Galaxy Gear smartwatch.

There are equally strong rumours that Apple, Google and Microsoft are each planning smartwatches of their own. Will we finally see the major OEMs enter a smartwatch war? Will it revolve around hardware or software? We can’t wait to find out.

Meanwhile, there’s another rumoured entrant into the tablet market. Ever since Nokia shacked up with Microsoft to make Windows Phone-powered devices, it’s been rumoured that they will be making a Windows-based tablet. Given that their Lumia line is responsible for some of the most well-received smartphone hardware, it’s not a surprise that people will want to see what a Nokia Windows tablet would look like.

Recent rumours have renewed interest in a Nokia-Microsoft tablet that was supposedly cancelled after Nokia decided to scrap its model of a Windows RT tablet in lieu of a Windows 8 one. The fresh rumour states the device will have a 10.1-inch screen, will be powered by a quad-core processor, and run Windows RT.
